Features of wintering plants
Probably, every flower grower, and not just a beginner, once “lost” their indoor flowers, and most likely this happened in winter. A cold window sill, hot dry air from batteries, drafts and excessive watering are common causes of plant death in winter. Improper organization of winter peace may not immediately destroy the plant, but will negatively affect its general development and subsequent flowering. Many indoor plants bloom and grow, albeit more accurately and in the cold season, but most of the colors need rest during a break. This article will tell about the features of wintering our indoor favorites.

Indoor flowers that do not require special conditions in winter
Many plants in our homes are immigrants from the tropical forests of South America and Asia. In these areas there are no sharp transitions from heat to cold – approximately the same temperature and humidity of the air are maintained all year round. Therefore, our indoor “tropicans” usually grow all year round without a break. The most popular representatives of the tropics in our homes are:
- diffenbachia;
- Monster;
- singonium;
- scindapsus;
- ficus;
- dracene;
- Reo;
- aglaonema;
- alocasia.
All these plants do not require special conditions for winter content. However, in order for the flowers not to lose their attractiveness, you also need to create a certain level of comfort, since the climate in our apartments changes sharply with the onset of cold weather.
In the winter season, many indoor plants do not need top dressing. From October to March we do not demonstrate fertilizers.
If there is a pot with a flower on the windowsill, then you need to provide heat roots. To do this, install containers with plants on the hea t-inpulsive material – a wooden or foam board. If this is not possible, remove the flower from the windowsill and place it near the window.
In the cold season, indoor plants often die from excessive watering, since the air temperature is higher than the soil temperature, and the roots in the cold are worse. Therefore, an indispensable condition for successful wintering is to reduce watering. You should always give a dry ground to dry.
Heating devices, no matter how beautiful and environmentally friendly, dry the air. The dried leaves of the leaves signal the need to increase humidity. Tropical plants need to be sprayed daily and preferably several times a day. To increase humidity, a pot with a flower can be placed in a palette with water. So that the bottom of the pot does not touch water, pebbles are poured into the pallet, and a flower is already laid on top. Many flower growers install open shallow containers with water on the batteries. Water evaporates from the heat and increases the humidity in the room.
Since tropical planters continue to grow most often in winter – they need good lighting. Out of lack of light, the shoots expand, the internodes are extended and the entire plant becomes pale and frail. Therefore, the southern window is an ideal option, and if there is a possibility of distance, you can increase the duration of daylight hours with phytolamps, including two hours in the morning and evening. Sometimes flower breeders use lumocians lamps, but to achieve the effect, it is necessary to arrange about 20 cm from plants, and this is not always practical.
The descimal temperature for tropical plants in winter +18 … +22 via C. Water and spray blossoms in winter must be defended at room temperature or slightly warmer.

Plants that need a relative winter peace
A large group of interior plants is represented by immigrants from subtropics. Among them there are decorative deciduous shrubs and evergreen vines and beautifully flowering herbaceous plant-a variety of shapes and colors is amazing.
Often an unfortunate lover buys a flower after getting to know such a beauty in the shop and has not asked what conditions are required for his maintenance. In the meantime, this group of plants, regardless of whether it comes from dry or wet subtropics, needs winter peace.
In order to bring the conditions for the wintering of subtropical plants closer, it is necessary to lower the air temperature to +15 … +16 via C. It is best to put pots with such flowers on the window of the no n-southern orientation. The bright sun is contraindicated in them, but the air humidity must definitely be increased.
But not all colors are suitable for spraying, especially in the cold season. Stains can occur on the leaves, and in exhaust flowers the core often turns out of the water. It is therefore better to use pallets with water, humidifier or to cover the battery in the room with a damp towel.
Watering cold contents should be particularly careful. It is necessary to give the earth to dry and always dig the floor in the pot before watering. If you are dry under the upper layer, you can water it.
In a cool room, colors do not need to need additional lighting. The top dressing is also excluded until spring. If you meet all of these conditions, the growth of plants will stop and that is exactly what the rest is needed.
Popular shrubs and trees whose home country are dry subtropics:
Wet subtropical immigrants
- Azalea;
- Amaryllis;
- Hibiscus;
- Asparagus;
- Aspidistra;
- Fern;
- Hoya is meaty.
The residents of the desert
The residents of the succulents and cacti deserts are the most unpretentious. At first glance, winter peace also needs winter peace. This group of plants winter well in a cool sun window with rare or rather very rare irrigation. This process should be more of a slight moisturizing soil than irrigation.
The optimal air temperature is +13 … +18 ° C, humidity – what is. If it is not possible to create suitable conditions, cacti and succulents will continue their growth and due to a lack of lighting, they expand and lose their rich color.
Features of the winter peace of orchids
Recently, the orchids in the floric culture of the orchid have been very popular in the interiors. Beautiful plants with beautiful, long flowers conquered the hearts themselves, far away from flower breeding. The overcoming of representatives of this group largely depends on the type of plant.
Phalaenopsis is the most common orchid type and prefers light lighting in winter, often with additional lighting. Air temperature + 16 … + 20 ° C and rare watering by diving in water. Top dressing is administered at most once a month and with a lower concentration than in summer. The same conditions are suitable for other orchids with a mild resting phase – Miltonia and Paphiopedilum, Dendrobium, Lelia.

Plants that need a complete winter rest in winter
Some orchids (certain types of Dendrobium, Tunia and Playon) need a full break in winter. The leaves of these plants die for winter, so that irrigation is gradually reduced to anything so that the earthy coma can dry completely. The ideal air temperature is between 8 ° C and 10 ° C. The lighting is bright.
Plants such as hip astrum and gloxinia also need absolute calm in winter. Leaves and stems die at the end of the vegetation period and all processes in tubers and onions slow down. After the complete drying, the leaves must be removed, and the flowerpot should be covered with a saucer or a plastic bag with holes and placed in a dark place with an air temperature of +12 … +15 ° C. If so don’t have such a place in the apartment, you can put the container in a black plastic bag and leave on a cool windowsill, removed from the battery.
From time to time, the earth in the pots is easily moistened to prevent the coma from drying out complete. At the beginning of spring, tubers and onions are transplanted into a new substrate, slightly moistened and placed on a light window. They start eating with the advent of sprouts.
Florarium – The best solution for winter maintenance of plants
Miniature flowers can be placed in Floraria for winter. Ordinary aquariums are often used in different forms for these purposes, since special glass pavilions for room flowers are very expensive. Under such conditions, most plants feel great not only in the winter season.
A special microclimate creates optimal conditions for the growth of flowers – the absence of drafts, high humidity and a stable temperature are estimated by most inner residents. A wel l-made composition of different types becomes a charming decoration of the interior.

Diseases and pests of “Zimmer” in winter
In the winter season, our room dwellers of diseases and pests are threatened. Flowers that hibernate on cold window sills can develop various putrefaction because moisture and low temperatures create favorable conditions for the development of mushrooms. Therefore, careful watering is the main prevention against such diseases.
Spider mites and worms are activated in rooms with low humidity – lovers dry air. Therefore, an attempt must be made to increase the air humidity, and if pests have already occurred, treat the plants with an insecticide. It is best to use biological preparations for houseplants such as Fitoverm or Avertin N. For humans and pets, these products are slightly toxic, and they are very effective against pests.
Conclusion. For most houseplants, it is not that difficult to take care of winter rest – the main thing is that you know where they come from and how they hibernate under natural conditions. Therefore, when buying a flower, ask the seller how to maintain the plant not only in summer, but also in winter, and only make a purchase afterwards after you have assessed your skills.
If you are not ready to turn your time and effort to cultivate a plant that you like but are moody, you can choose an unpretentious but no less beautiful flower that will inspire you for many years.

Housing plants in winter: This is how they help to survive stress
So that room flowers are healthy and beautiful, they need optimal conditions in every season. However, the care of green pets has its special features in the cold season: During this time, most cultures suffer from lack of light, drafts, cold windowsill, too dry air due to functioning heating devices. If you know the special features of maintaining houseplants in winter, help you to successfully survive stress.
What should be considered when maintaining hibernation plants?
In the short frost days from December to February, you should try to facilitate the living conditions of room flowers that continue the vegetation period as far as possible. To achieve this, attention should be paid to the following factors:
- Factory location;
- Enlightenment;
- Microclimate;
- Frequency and intensity of irrigation;
- Need for food.
Choose a suitable place to hibernate plants
If room flowers on the south windows in summer have to be protected from the scorching sun to protect them from burns, in winter you only get the necessary dose of sunlight with this arrangement, and even on clear days. Remove all plants from north-facing window sills and concentrate them on the south and east window so that the air can circulate freely between them.
On a note. Do not leave green pets on the window sills on which the windows are often open – the effects of ice cream harms you.
Make sufficient lighting – this is important
An essential condition for the health of houseplants is a sufficient amount of light. In the cold season, the days are short and often cloudy – creating optimal illumination becomes a problem. One of her solutions is shown above: you have to “move” room flowers. What else can be done?
- Turn the pots regularly to prevent the plant stems from stretching to the side and trying to capture more sunlight.
- Keep your windows clean – dirt can block 30 % or more of the light output.
- Dust the leaves in good time so that you can better absorb the sparse sunlight.
- If the leaves of their pets still become pale, they shrink, buy phytol lamps and provide at least 2–3 hours for additional lighting so that the plants are saturated with light. Suitable for these and conventional fluorescent lamps.
On a note. Additional lighting is particularly necessary for Begonia, geraniums, roses, fuchsia.
Create an acceptable microclimate for wintering flowers
In the frosty time, room flowers need protection against cold. Sprouts can be hypothermic or even freezing if they come into contact with ice glasses or when windows are opened to ventilate the room. To protect, pay attention to a sufficient distance of the pots to the glass. When ventilating, arrange barriers for plants in front of the cold air flow or arrange them in another place for this time.
The roots of green pets that stand on the windowsill or on the floor without heating also suffer from the cold, the plants are stressed. You will feel much better if you build coasters for pots or put hea t-insulating material underneath.
On a note. Ceramic flower pots penetrate the cold faster than through plastic containers.
Excess heat also has a disadvantage on flower cultures indoors. They can suffer from overheating if they are placed near a radiator or on the edge of a windowsill under which there is a heat source. Make sure that there are at least 20 cm distance between the battery and pots by placing standing underneath or hanging flower pots with plants in the window opening.
Gardeners are often annoyed that the tips or edges of leaf plates dry out in winter. Sometimes the leaves roll in, yellow and fall off. There are several reasons for this phenomenon, but as a rule, these are the negative effects of air overtocked by heating devices. To help your pets, you can:
- Cover the battery with a damp cloth;
- Perfect plants more often with water at room temperature, for which this is permitted, carry out water processes in the form of a shower and cover the soil with a film;
- In addition to room flowers that cannot be sprayed, place containers with clean water;
- Wipe the big leaves with a damp cloth.
And it is best to buy a good model of a humidifier – it will also be useful for people who live in the house.
Adjust the irrigation plan to the needs of the plants
With a decrease in daylight hours, the growth processes slow down and the need for room flowers in soil moisture decreases. Excessive moisture is a common reason for the unsuccessful wintering of green pets, even for their loss from root rot. In winter, reduce irrigation frequency to 1-2 weeks and for cacti and succulents to 1 time a month. If you hibernate cacti at a temperature of no more than +14 ° C, you cannot water them from November to May.
When drinking the plant, check the condition of the floor in a saucepan or flower stuff. The dried surface is not a reason for immediate irrigation. When the floor is dry at a depth of 2 cm, water and a number of rules are observed.
- Use water with water in open containers. The liquid temperature should be space or a little higher.
- “Irrigation” with interior colors, order promptly and plentiful. With narrow watering, water flows around the circumference of the pot without soaking an earthen lump.
- To avoid the roots of excess water in the palette, they do not leave for more than 20 minutes.
- It is useful for the prevention of root rot for water systems with phytosporin once a month. For this purpose, dilute 5-5 g of powder in a water bucket, mix for 4 hours and water.
Do not overdo it with feeding
In winter, fertilizer is undesirable for most inner flowers in a “nap”. Don’t try to stimulate your growth: the result can be the opposite. At this point, plants in plants are slowed down and do not absorb the proposed diet, which leads to the oversaturation of the soil with different salts. Their high concentration can cause root burns.
In a hint. Plants that bloom, feed, feed, but no more than once a month in winter and in the decorative rough large larg e-scale (hibiscus, monster, palm trees, ficuses, etc.). Reduce the dosage of fertilizers compared to the usual.
As you can see, the care of plants in the house is not too easy. However, if you appreciate your collection of internal flowers, don’t regret creating the cheapest wintering conditions. And don’t forget the 7 gold rules for the care of interior plants.
