Tip from the Stiga experts: How do you prepare your chainsaw for autumn and winter gardening?

This is how you should prepare your chainsaw for winter camping. Tips for storing a chainsaw in the winter

Most chainsaws are not physically suitable for winter use. A chainsaw doesn’t work well in cold temperatures and high humidity. In addition, cold weather is largely unsuitable for working around the house.

With the onset of cold weather, many chainsaw owners simply send their sawing equipment to a shelf in the garage until better times. At the same time, few novices know that proper chainsaw storage in the winter requires the preservation of equipment by special technology.

There is a special series of chainsaws approved for use in winter cold. Such models have a well insulated body and a heated carburetor.

During prolonged storage of chainsaws there is a complete stoppage of the drives, which leads to the following negative consequences:

  • Sympathetic fumes and other components stop lubricating, causing them to dry out.
  • The old grease turns into a thick slick that dries out over time and becomes hard.
  • The seals deteriorate, as do the filter elements.
  • The fuel runs out and loses its conditioned properties.

In many cases, chainsaw owners have to be surprised that the chainsaw works perfectly well in the fall, and in the spring no longer bounces circular. All this happens because of improper storage of the chainsaw in the winter, in the cold season.

General rules of equipment storage

Every tool, regardless of type and purpose, should be washed, dried and inspected for wear and replacement. There is nothing worse than moisture getting into moving or sensitive parts and mechanisms. When frozen in an unheated room, it turns to ice and damages system components. For fire safety purposes, it is also recommended that the gasoline be drained from the gas tank. However, there are other recommendations for oil – the equipment cannot be “dry”, so do not remove the oil for the winter, but change it.

When storing the equipment, stack it as directed in the instruction manual.

Cutting parts (e.g. lawnmower gauges) should be sharpened and joint connections cleaned of dust and dirt and lubricated. Check the condition of the fasteners and power cable of the power tool, and replace them if necessary, without waiting until spring. The following is an in-depth look at any type of equipment and its preservation requirements.

Optimal Solution

For winter work, it is better to buy a chainsaw specifically designed for total power. There is a technique that is equipped with a system of hot air supply to the carburetor with cylinder cooling ribs. This reduces the risk of frosting of the air filter and prevents the formation of condensation on the carburetor. Many manufacturers (Makita, Stihl, Maruyama) produce models in which you can switch between “winter” and “summer” mode with a special flap in the cover. Since the carburetor is blown with preheated air when operating in winter mode, aipori is not possible.

Drain the remaining gasoline from the tank, drain the oil from the tank (tire and chain lubrication). Remove the saw’s chinkus, clean everything, wipe it down – that’s probably all the preservation.

Chainsaws are usually used only during the warm season. You should test them starting in the fall to determine if the tool needs to be serviced. And if Husqvarna chainsaws are now quite affordable and in good condition, it’s time to get them ready for winter. Of course, the necessary processes are markedly different from those for the usual saw or shovel.

How to store a chainsaw in winter

This is, perhaps, one of the few tools that have to work in the cold season. However, a chainsaw’s operating temperature range is usually narrow because it contains resistant parts, gas and oil. If the manufacturer guarantees the tool to work at e-10 ° C, it is a very good indicator and such a saw can be used almost all year round. If you leave your dacha for a long time, take care of its proper safety.

“The heart” of any chainsaw is a single-cylinder two-stroke carburetor engine. Another important element is the chain. It is the care of these two elements that most of the preservation recommendations are devoted to:

  • First, you must drain the remaining fuel from the tank, carburetor and oil to lubricate the chain. You can run the chainsaw idling and wait for the gasoline to run out to exhaust the fuel completely. After that, wipe the gas tank dry so it doesn’t start to rust. This is an option for longer preservation, at least 3 months. But there is a second option for those who get into the woods in the winter or do other work. In this case, it is recommended to fill the tank around the edges with quality gasoline and leave it in this state for storage. If you urgently need to cut down a tree – great, you have a fully prepared technique at your fingertips. But remember, gasoline, which after 2-3 frosty winter weeks begins to resemble the consistency of jelly, can be deactivated; even a first-class engine;
  • Using a wire dipstick or homemade nozzle, remove the jug filters from the fuel and oil tanks. Wash them and put them back in place after they dry, or replace them with new ones if necessary. Do the same with the air filter;
  • Remove saw chain and guide bar and clean them of sawdust, wood and dirt;
  • Remove the clutch cover, rinse it thoroughly under running warm water and let it dry. Lubricate the worm gear and side chain tensioning system screw;
  • Remove the spark plug and clean it of soot and fuel residue. Pour 5-7 ml of engine oil into the spark plug hole and crank the engine 3-4 turns to distribute the oil over the connecting rod and cylinder-piston group. Leave the piston up (in the raised position). After that, put the spark plug in place, but do not put on the ignition terminal;
  • Coat the saw bar and chain with protective lubricant and store in paper or cloth soaked in oil.
  • Pack up the tool and hide the removed parts in a dry, dark, and non-dark place.

Check the crankshaft about once a month to renew the grease on the connecting rods and in the cylinders with pistons.

If you have an electric saw, all you have to do for maintenance is to lubricate the saw bar and chain with a protective lubricant.

Using chain saws in cold weather: Highlights

There is always a task for the chainsaw in the house, so it is not always rational to send it for a “winter vacation”. In such cases, the tool is not saved completely, that is, without complete disassembly.

Removed tires and headset

If you plan to operate your chainsaw in the winter, store it, and especially the fuel mixture, in a well-ventilated, dry and warm, at most unheated room, protected from outside influences. Introducing

Before you start, make sure that the fuel is at a temperature sufficient to ignite and that the oil in the tool lubricant is of normal viscosity. Some chainsaw models are equipped with a system to supply hot air to the carburetor from the cylinder cooling fins, which reduces air filter frosting and prevents condensation on the carburetor.

Check the lubrication system before starting.

Start with the throttle closed when cold and check lubrication and chain tension before starting. Do not put the tool back in immediately after finishing work. This is guaranteed to cause condensation, so it will have to be removed, disassembled and cleaned.

How to store a lawn mower in the winter

This machine is sent out for a “well-trimmed break” in the fall and retrieved near the end of spring. Because of this long “downtime,” the maintenance requirements for lawn mowers are very high.

Gasoline lawnmower

For gasoline lawnmowers, the main elements are the engine and the cutting parts. They should be given maximum attention:

  • The first condition for proper storage is a room with humidity of no more than 70%, as well as no sudden changes in temperature that increase humidity.
  • If you have been working with the mower, grass particles and with them moisture can get on the internal parts of the device. Therefore, be sure to wash, clean and dry the blades and other parts within reach. Remove grass residue from the body, exhaust pipe, engine radiator, etc;
  • Opinions are divided on fuel. Some dachshunds throw away its leftovers and wipe the gas tank dry to keep condensation from forming in winter. Another half, on the contrary, fills the tank up to the edges and leaves it like that for the winter. But in this case low-quality gasoline can give sediment, which will make it difficult to start the engine in the spring. Still it is easier to get rid of the residual liquid from the carburetor, than to clean it from plaque and deposits. That’s why we recommend the first option.
  • Check the cutter blade – it needs repair and sharpening. Definitely remove it for the winter and get one. Contact a professional if necessary;
  • The oil level should be as recommended in the instruction manual (for 4-stroke engines).
  • Hold the mower so its wheels do not touch the ground or are in a suspended position or on stands.
Electric lawn mower

Before putting the unit away for the winter, check the integrity of all contacts, inspect them for oxidation and rust. Otherwise, the electric motor does not require special preservation measures. Wipe the battery for the winter, clean the body, deck and knives from the grass, if necessary, sharpen.

How to store the trimmer in winter

Having a trimmer, you need to know not only how to handle it correctly, but also how to store it competently. Often gasoline or electric trimmers are simply thrown into the shed, where they lie until spring. Such carelessness can be costly.

Benzotrimmer

Benzotrimmers are powerful and compact devices that were designed to mow grass. Proper storage is one component of its long, trouble-free operation.

  • Find a suitable place for storage. This should be a dry room with normal humidity, isolated from light sources and open flames. The trimmer should not be allowed to freeze. It is better to cover it with moisture absorbers (for example, an old ceiling).
  • Drain all fuel mixture (gasoline and oil) and let the unit idle until it stops.
  • Remove any grass residue between the blades and fixed parts of the trimmer, as well as from the blades. Do not be lazy and carefully inspect the body for any organic debris.
  • Turn off and inspect the spark plug. The normal color of the electrodes is red; if they are covered in carbon deposits, they should be cleaned or replaced.
  • Remove the metal blade and clean any dirt from it. Check the integrity of the blade – replace it if it is cracked or chipped. Store the blade that has been dried and cleaned of dirt separately;
  • If your trimmer has a trimmer cord (fishing line), store it in fresh water over the winter. This way, it will retain its original flexibility, hold up under tension, and last longer.
  • Keep the bike suspended. If the handlebar is bothersome, turn it the other way or unscrew it.

Before preserving it for the winter, check the integrity of the wires, insulation and contacts in the electric motor. Avoid sudden changes in temperature and do not keep the trimmer out in the cold. Condensation that forms may deactivate the contacts and other elements of the device.

Working in the cold

Before working, check that the fuel has sufficient temperature to ignite and that the oil in the tool’s lubrication system is of normal viscosity. Even high oil and fuel crystallize in the cold and become viscous. Therefore, it is advisable to use special winter grades in extreme cases with diesel oil or gasoline. This way it won’t thicken in freezing temperatures and ensures even lubrication and cranking stability. Oil that is not very frozen can be tried to melt with a saw at idle speed. 11 You can use the entire poured volume beforehand, otherwise the feed channels will be reached and the saw will have to stand under threat for a long time.

Working at low temperatures is complicated by the fact that the engine starts worse in the cold. Once the air damper is opened, it may either not start quickly or stand still because gasoline evaporates poorly in such conditions. If the choke fails to start, there is a risk that the spark plug will fill with gasoline. Before starting, it is advisable to warm up the saw, check the chain tension and make sure the throttle lever is closed.

After use, it is important to store your saw in a well-ventilated, dry and preferably warm place.

How to store a cultivator and power tiller in winter

Such “serious” agricultural machines as a cultivator and power tiller require proper care. The abundance of parts and complex device does not always allow you to completely clean the cultivator, and a walking tractor from dirt, but it is still worth doing it.

  • The first step is the preservation of the engine. Leave the gasoline and its residues until the engine has exhausted its life. Remove the oil and replace it with new oil before the engine cools down.
  • Refresh the paper air filter or wash the foam filter with warm water and detergent. If it dries, soak it in machine oil. Clean the fuel filter;
  • Remove the spark plug, clean it, moisten it with gasoline and dry it. Pour 15 ml of oil into the cylinder and rotate the shaft slowly to distribute it over all parts. Reinstall the spark plug;
  • During inspection, clean all parts, components, engine fins and muffler of dirt, contaminants and oil stains. When removing dirt from the gear, cutter and other parts, do not use iron scrapers, or you will damage the protective layer and cause rust. Better take a wooden stick or spatula and rinse the parts under running water. After the “water procedures” wipe everything with a cloth and dry it;
  • Treat the cutting edges and the outer surface of the gear with a rag soaked in machine oil. Also coat extra bits and other metal parts with a protective film of oil, wrap them in brown paper and place them in a wooden or plastic box.

If you follow our advice, in the spring you will get from the hozblok absolutely ready to work devices that will greatly simplify the gardening chores and help you get high yields with minimal effort.

Prepare the saw for winter storage

If you are among those who prefer not to work with the saw in winter, store the tool in advance, not waiting for severe frosts. Here are the basic rules for preserving your chainsaw:

1. Drain the oil and fuel.

Remove the fuel filter from the fuel tank, rinse (replace if necessary) and reinstall.

3. 3. Start the saw and run it at idle speed to allow all fluid to drain completely from the carburetor passages and lubrication system.

There is no one-size-fits-all definition of chainsaw life. One may imply the time until the first overhaul of the engine, another may imply the time until the compression decreases. A domestic definition implies time before the tool is sent to the scrap yard. Confusion is inevitable. So, regardless of the numbers you hear from the seller, focus on the availability of branded service and reliability of the supplier and manufacturer. And to stop thinking about repairs, remember the basic rules of chain saw operation: choose the right mode of operation and avoid overloading.

4. 4. Remove saw chain and guide bar, clean off wood residue, dust and dirt. Coat with protective lubricant and store in oiled cloth or paper.

5. Remove the brake cover, rinse under warm running water and then dry.

6. Lubricate the saw chain sprocket (worm) gear and side chain tensioner screw with chain oil.

7. Remove the air filter, rinse, dry, and reinstall.

8. Remove the spark plug and clean it of carbon deposits and fuel buildup.

9. Pour about 5 ml of engine oil into the spark plug hole. To distribute the oil over the surface of the crank and cylinder-piston group parts, rotate the engine crankshaft 3-4 revolutions, the piston should be at the top dead center.

Make your chainsaw winter-proof: save your tool

The service life of a chainsaw can be considerably shortened if this tool is not prepared for work or storage at low temperatures. Therefore, in order not to break their tool when working in extreme conditions or during winter storage, experienced owners of such equipment can use simple rules and the mandatory preservation of a chainsaw before winterization.

How to operate a chainsaw during the cold season

The main problem with working with a chainsaw in the winter is that it is difficult to start. Gasoline does not evaporate and ignite well in cold weather, which causes difficulties when working and starting the engine. If the chainsaw starts with the carburetor barrier open, the engine simply does not start or immediately stalls. In this case, there is a real danger of flooding the spark plug with gasoline.

To solve this problem is very simple. Experts recommend:

  • Use special fuel mixes in the winter;
  • Warm up the chainsaw before working;
  • Start the engine with the choke closed.

Another common problem in winter can lead to serious chainsaw failure.

These situations can be avoided by using winter grades with oil, or in the most extreme cases, using an oil binder or a mixture of oil and diesel fuel. If the lubricant is still used in cold weather, you can try to warm it up by running the chainsaw at idle speed. At the same time, experts advise not to stop until all the oil is out, so as not to suffer with the cleaning of the channels of the lubrication system.

Tip! After working in the cold, it is recommended to place the chainsaw in a bright, ventilated and, if possible, heated place for storage.

How to prepare for winter camping

Not all chainsaw owners use this tool in the winter. However, there is work for you to do. We are talking about the preservation of the tool, which should be carried out before the onset of frost.

Preservation of the saw takes place in several stages:

  • Drain the consumables;
  • We take out the filter from the fuel system, wash (replace) and put it back in the tank.
  • Start the chainsaw to finally rid the tool of fuel and oil.
  • Remove the chain and screw the bar to clean them from contamination and treat them with a special smoke (these parts are wrapped in oiled paper or rags and stored separately from the saw).
  • Remove the brake ceiling, wash it in warm water, dry it and put it back in place.
  • Lubricate the stub (“worm”) and the side chain tension adjusting screw (use special smokers);
  • Remove air cleaner filter, free it from dirt and install it in place.
  • Throw out the ignition bulb and remove the soot and fuel residue.
  • Pour a few drops of oil for engines in the hole under the plug and turn 2-3 times the crankshaft, so that the piston remains in the upper position (lubrication of mechanisms of CCM and CPG);
  • Put the spark plug in place (it is not necessary to put the terminal on).
  • Protect the chainsaw and the removed mechanisms from moisture and dust.

Whether it is necessary to buy the special saw for work on frost?

Specialists prefer to work only with special tools for working at low temperatures in cold weather. Such saws are usually equipped with a special mechanism for supplying hot air from the engine to the carburetor. As a result, the air cleaning element does not freeze, and the carburetor is reliably protected from condensation and icing.

At the same time, the models of some western firms (Stihl, Makita, etc.) can be considered as all-weather, as there is a special damper on the cover of this tool, with which you can choose “winter” (with carburetor purging) or “summer” (without purging) operating modes of the chainsaw.

When choosing a chainsaw, however, it is worth paying attention to the brand, the call of the supplier and the availability of service. In addition, every owner of such a tool can significantly extend its life, if he will regularly take care of it, choose the right mode of operation and avoid severe overloading.
