Design: The buyer of the tractor for walk injuries has to work a little with the connected screwdriver and with a wrench: you have to put together the mills, pour the steering column, a couch and an oil into the engine and the transmission. The assembly sequence is not only described “in words”, but also supported by photos in the instructions. The supply of motoblock “in the analysis” is widespread: the composite device in the trunk of most cars does not fit.

According to the instructions, the engine must be filled with motor oil for garden equipment and the usual “gear” 85W90 in the gearbox (by the way, such products are also produced under the Patriot Garden brand). Before leaving the factory, the unit is checked and pre-run, which is evidenced by the remaining oil in the crankcases of the engine and gearbox. The two-wheel tractor was already assembled in a van and brought to us for testing. On site, only oil was poured into the gearbox.

The Montana model is one of the rather heavy hand-held tractors and is designed for processing large areas. The line also includes an even more powerful diesel Detroit weighing a hundredweight and a half. By the way, all Patriot Garden models of cultivators and walk-behind tractors are named after an American state.

Some manufacturers prefer to sharpen knives to the “cutting” condition, while others have a cutting edge thickness of around 2-3mm. In our case, cutters of the second type, hardened, with a rounded cutting edge. The truth cannot be found in disputes between “sharp points” and “blunt points”: sharp ones penetrate the ground better, but when they are used, the likelihood of “digging in” increases. Unsharpened knives are safer, and modern engines usually have more than enough power to get the job done.

The walk behind tractor kit includes wheels, three pairs of knives on hex shafts, side guards and a removable front transport wheel. The opener link bracket attaches to the hitch with a metal pin. The choke and fuel tap levers are located one above the other at the front left. The steering column is adjustable, has ten fixed positions in the horizontal plane and four in the height.

Spring pins are used for clamping: lifted, turned the steering wheel, released “until it clicks” – quickly, easily and reliably. A gearbox with two levers: a short one selects the direction of movement, and a long one, brought to the operator, selects one of the two gears or “neutral”. The splined PTO shaft is closed with a protective cover consisting of a fastening threaded ring with a welded handle (which also fastens additional equipment to the shaft) and a round metal plug inserted into the ring from the inside with a gasket seal.

On the right handle is the engine speed control, on the left is the clutch lever and structurally similar keys for turning on the ignition and headlights. Their execution looks quite interesting: at first glance, they seem to consist of two separate buttons: a large square and a small “strip”. When you press the “strip” the ignition turns on and the headlight turns off. Without “clicking” it’s hard to guess that the key is actually one.

TESTS AND EVALUATIONS: The initial data are as follows: the soil has not been cultivated for many years, the grass is low but hard. It hasn’t rained in the area for a month, and the water in the well is more than 20 meters deep. In addition, the well was dug relatively recently, and the earth was simply scattered around the site. In general, it is difficult to describe the soil as “virgin”, here the definition “asphalt” is more appropriate. Digging it with a shovel is unrealistic, you need a pickaxe. Usually the first plowing of the land with new equipment is carried out in the spring, when there is no grass yet and the soil is wet.

I want to remind you that August in our country ended in the yard. Fortunately, large areas are not required to understand how the walk-behind tractor will behave: a plot of 10–20 m 2 is quite enough, it is processed “in one direction”: walked forward, then turned backward and returned to its original one Position.

The throttle lever was set to about half of the maximum: for the first hours of operation, high engine speeds are undesirable. The opening finger was installed in the third hole from the bottom (there are six in total). The number of cutters was not reduced: it was clear that the first pass would be preparatory to clearing the grass area, and full-fledged cultivation was possible only in the second and subsequent passes.

The engine started the first time, worked stably, in the future its starts did not cause any problems either. After a few minutes of warm-up, we got to work.

After the walk-behind tractor passed the site in a straight line once, it was stopped to see the result. It turned out that the soil under the tillers had lifted a few centimeters, leaving an unworked strip in the middle.

In general, everything is quite predictable: the crankcase just “lay down” on the ground, and it would not have been possible to dig deeper. The vibration on the steering wheel is quite strong, but it doesn’t interfere with your work, you just have to hold the walk-behind tractor firmly without trying to steer it unnecessarily. In particular, therefore, all three pairs of knives were left on the shaft: with one revolution of the shaft, 24 knives penetrate the “asphalt”, there would be fewer of them, the frequency of “jumps” would also decrease, but the amplitude would most likely increase.

The walk-behind tractor coped with the first task: pulling out the grass and slightly loosening the soil. To increase the area of ​​​​the site and work the strip between the headers, two more parallel passes were made with a side shift of about 30–40 cm, then the headers were cleared of grass, after which the series of three parallel passes was followed twice repeated. Each time the walk-behind tractor “scraped” a new layer, and the vibration decreased: it was extinguished by the excavated earth. In such working conditions, the share was not in demand at all: the plowing depth is determined by the difference in the radii of the knives and the crankcase, which itself becomes a depth gauge.

Further testing took place under slightly less stringent conditions in a field that had been tilled in the spring. In order not to drag the walk-behind tractor, wheels were mounted on it and again “changed shoes” in the field. Incidentally, the cotter pins can be easily pulled out with your fingers without tools. It was much more fun on the well-groomed, if unnecessarily hard, ground with soft grass. The feeling of the first pass on the field was comparable to the third on a hard section: the cutters “pressed” the crankcase a little lower, and acceptable results were obtained in two passes, the second of which was already carried out in high gear. It was easier possible to increase the shaft RPM by “adding gas”, but as the engine is new I didn’t want to do that. The power reserve in second gear was more than adequate.

The identified design flaw is related to the not very good location of the throttle cable. It starts at the right grip, goes around the steering column on the left, goes over the gearbox and ends on the right at the carburetor. Such a tortuous path is needed to allow the steering column to rotate 180° in either direction. Above the gearbox, the cable touches the direction switch lever, on which a plate with stickers “forward” and “backward” is welded. If the cable gets under the plate, it will interfere with the shift. To prevent the cable from slipping, you must tie it together with cable or plastic ties from the walk-behind tractor kit. The simplest binding point is the handle.
