Overview of the Belarus MTZ-40 tractor. Features of the model, its advantages and disadvantages

Tractor MTZ-40 – features of the transitional model

The line of Minsk tractors includes models that have been successfully produced for several decades, and transitional versions that were removed from the assembly line after several years.

One of these machines is the universal tractor MTZ-40, designed for field, harvesting, transport and other agricultural work. After extensive testing, prototype tractors with traction class 0.9 were recommended for mass production.

  • The easy-to-maintain and compact machine has been equipped with a sufficiently powerful and economical diesel power unit, a mechanical reverse gearbox, which allows the most efficient use of forward and reverse speeds.
  • The presence of a hydrostatic or mechanical demultiplier retarder on individual series made it possible to use the 40th model for transplanting and harvesting industrial crops.
  • The design of this machine is based on compatibility with branded hitch and hitch units, traditional for Minsk tractors, including those designed for heavier MTZ-5 machines and their modifications.
  • When arranging the tractor, a semi-frame frame scheme characteristic of Minsk tractors, rear axle wheels with an increased diameter and a front axle with a damper suspension are used.

MTZ-40 is on the list of the first universal machines, for which the designers of the Minsk Tractor Plant created a pressurized cabin, quite practical and comfortable for its time.

Technical characteristics

With average dimensions of 3.66 x 1.62 x 2.1 m, the MTZ-40 weighed 2.6 tons. Maneuverability was provided by a small turning radius, cross-country ability – high ground clearance and a special tread pattern. The working and transport speed range is between 2.4 and 24 km/h. Worm steering, without hydraulic booster.

  • The Belarus-40 tractor was equipped with an economical D-40 diesel engine with a power of 45 hp, which was very perfect for that time. with an average consumption of 182 g/hp. in hour. Fuel consumption was also reduced thanks to the refinement of the gas distribution system, in particular the use of larger diameter valves, the design of the air filter and the fuel filter housing were changed.
  • Changes were made to the design of the drive unit, which related to the arrangement of the gear pump drive of the on-board hydraulics with a separate unit.

The general concept of the D-40 power unit became the basis for the development of more powerful and more demanding branded engines with a capacity of up to several hundred horsepower.

The performance of the on-board hydraulics made it possible for the tractor to work with Kuhn front loaders. Shovels of various sizes were offered as interchangeable tools, forks for loading – rolled material, industrial wood, silage or hay.

transmission

The overhaul life of this unit is increased by additional reinforcement of the entire structure, hardening of the surfaces of the cam clutches and gears by carburizing and hardening with high-frequency currents. For more efficient oil cooling and additional rigidity, the gearbox housing has been equipped with cast ribs.

The most loaded ball bearings were replaced by a role instead of watering parts of the gear mechanism, less meta l-intensive. The undeniable advantage of the tractor of the 40th model is almost 70%of the interchangeability with similar units of the MTZ-2 and MTZ-5 tractors.

The modernization of the transmission has largely influenced the clutch couplings. In the basic version, this is a constantly clogged, dry single-disc design with mechanical control for MINSK machines. In the tractor of the 40th model, the elasticity of the feathers is increased, access to setting points is improved.

MTZ-40

advantages and disadvantages

After completion of individual nodes, the 40th model tractor has every chance to become a basic model for the development of more advanced versions in the category of small and mediu m-sized installation machines.

In the list of the undeniable advantages of this machine:

  • A successful layout in every respect that has become traditional for new developments in the Minsk tractors;
  • Access to individual nodes for the maintenance and elimination of errors;
  • sufficient flexible traction properties of the electricity unit;
  • the presence of a reverse operating mode of the transmission;
  • Compatibility with a wide range of strikers, floor processing, cleaning and loading and loading devices;
  • The use of wide tires with rooms, the ability to install the running deader.

Significant MTZ 40 disadvantages are mainly problems of the cold that begin at low temperatures.

In the second place is the lack of synchronizers reduced gear accommodation, not the ergonomic placement of the dashboard, the handles and the switch of the main and auxiliary tractor systems.

The price of a new and used tractor MTZ-40

A car with zero only develops in the factory museum. The 40th model has long been removed by the sponsor, so that we can only speak about the purchase of a used tractor. Since the MTZ-40 has been manufactured for just a few years, the number of offers for sale is minimal.

When examining the Ukrainian Backup market, it seems that the owners considerably overestimate the costs of the cars sold. The price range of technology, which is in a very unsatisfactory technical state, begins with 1000 CU. A significant part of the suggestions are T-40 tractors that have nothing to do with the products of the MINSK system.

Analogue

This segment shows identical in performance and other parameters, former models from MTZ-2 and MTZ-5. These machines, in turn, were based on the creation of the MTZ 50 tractors in all areas of the economy and the all-wheel drive MTZ-52.

Another prototype of the 40th model is the LTZ-40 tractor, which has been produced by the Lipetsk tractor system for several decades. The only advantage of this less powerful machine with a electricity unit with 37 hp is forced air cooling. This tractor is characterized by disadvantages that are missing in the MTZ-40 structure. These are special motor oils that work at a temperature of at least 55 ° C, strict restrictions on the duration of the current input in small and idle speeds.

Reviews of the owners

I bought the “forty” of the Minsk plant, written off by public utilities in 2004, literally at the price of scrap metal. After a thorough repair, the car received a second life. The village is small, but there is enough work, I earn money by plowing vegetable gardens, delivering urgent cargo and products from the regional center for the local shop. In spring and autumn, my trouble-free MTZ is the only means of communication with the outside world. Alexei Ivanovich

I study at the agricultural college. In the neighboring courtyard there is an MTZ-40 donated by the chefs, which we maintain ourselves and, incidentally, acquire driving skills. In winter, the tractor is used to clear the streets of snow. The machine is running at full speed, especially since many spare parts are suitable for MTZ-50 and YuMZ tractors. Yura

MTZ-40: the history of the rarest tractor model – Belarus

Built immediately after the end of the war, today the Minsk Tractor Plant is a powerful machine-building holding that produces more than a hundred models of tractors, including nine modern production plants. The company’s products account for a tenth of all wheeled tractors produced worldwide. Among the models that rolled off the factory line were legendary tractors that had been in production for decades and machines that had only been in production for a few years. One of these quickly adjusted machines is the MTZ-40 tractor.

Origin and production history

MTZ-40 is a wheeled vehicle of traction class 0.9, manufactured by the Minsk Tractor Plant and used mainly for agricultural work that does not require high power – processing of light soils, maintenance of greenhouses and horticultural farms. The model, which was only produced for a short time, was also used in freight transport and in municipal services.

The development of the machine was started on the recommendation of the Main Automotive Institute of the USSR and was carried out under the constant supervision of the then party and state leadership of the country.

The mass production of the machine, which began in the middle of the last century, coincided with an intensive increase in the production by the Minsk enterprise of other MTZ-2 and MTZ-5 and 5L models and their modernization.

Equipped with an engine designed to consume diesel fuel, a low-mass tractor was produced for a short time – the company was developing rapidly, and models of machines were quickly replacing each other. After a short life, MTZ-40 became the basis for the design and development of other models of Minsk tractor builders.

power point

The car was equipped with a forty-five powerful four-stroke four-cylinder engine of the D-40 series, designed to consume diesel fuel.

The engine was developed taking into account the design features of the MTZ-40, equipped with a hydraulic system with a separate power unit. This feature of the tractor also influenced the location of the engine.

Engine developers made several changes to the design of the power plant, which made it possible to significantly reduce fuel consumption during machine operation. The flow cross sections of the engine head, intake ducts and the diameter of the valve plates have been increased, the fuel cleaning filters and the air cleaning system have been modernized.

In addition, heavy elements have been replaced with lighter parts.

draft

The tractor’s fully reversible mechanical transmission enabled effective control of the machine in all speed ranges, both when driving the machine forward and in reverse.

Some modifications from 40 Belaruzers were equipped with a driver who enabled the tractor to work at low speed.

The design features of the machine made it possible to aggregate them with most mechanisms of persecution with other models of the MINSK tractor system. In addition, the tractor could work with devices that are intended for more powerful than MTZ-40 machines.

The tractor used a traditional layout for the Minsk tractor system – a cabin that is installed behind the engine that does not prevent access to the power plant for repairs and maintenance and large rear wheels. The front guide tractor movement, the lower bikes were installed on a special spring suspension.

The tractor was equipped with tires with a pattern that resembles a Christmas silhouette that enabled the machine to excellent cros s-ability when working on floors with different humidity and makeivity.

A special star t-up engine was used to start the engine.

The main disadvantages of the car were:

  • Problematic start of the power plant at low temperatures;
  • Unknown placement of the controls of the machine movement and the operation of fastening devices.

The price of Belarus MTZ-40

Today it is very difficult to find MTZ-40 on sale. The car was produced for several years and its series production has been completed for a long time. The average costs for tractors in recent years that the market has offered is around 150,000 rubles. The earlier use of Belarus MTZ-40 earlier editions is much cheaper.

In addition to the production model of the MINSK tractor system, the MTZ-50 analogue of the Belarusian MTZ-40 is the T-40 T-40 tractor produced by the Lipetsk tractor system.

In contrast to Belarus, the Lipetsk model was produced much longer until 1995. The tractor of Lipetsk Machine Builder was equipped with a less motor than the MTZ-40 and was bizarre in operation.

The disadvantages of the T-40 were many restrictions that accompanied the operation of the engine. While operating the tractor, it was necessary to only use certain oils, the temperature of the crankcase oil should have to be at least 55 degrees. The car could not work idle for a long time and could be operated without a housing of the fan.

The MTZ-50, the publication of which started in 1962 and lasted more than thirty years, had a higher traction course (1.4) and a higher maximum speed if it went 34 km per hour forward.

Tractor MTZ-40

MTZ-40 is a universal wheeled row crop tractor, produced for a short time at the Minsk Tractor Plant. This device was intended for tillage in greenhouses, gardens, tillage work and belonged to traction class 0.9. Also, MTZ-40 was used to transport goods and carry out transport activities.

Little space is given to this model in the history of the Minsk Tractor Plant. Production began in the middle of the 20th century, at that time the company diligently increased the production of MTZ-2, MTZ-5 and MTZ-5L. Active work was also being done to modernize them. Soon the MTZ-40 appeared. However, the model did not exist for long and became the forerunner of more popular modifications.

First, the authorities of the USSR showed great interest in creating Belarus-40. As a result, the designer of the Minsk tractor work began implementing a project approved at the Head Tractor Institute. A few years later, prototypes from MTZ-40 occurred, according to which the tractor for serial production was recommended. The model received a diesel engine and a reduced mass that made it possible for him to carry out its work more effectively and to develop speeds of up to 24 km/h.

Technical characteristics

  • MTZ-40 had a total mass of 2.595 tons with medium dimensions.
  • The height of the tractor was 2100 mm, the length was 3660 mm, the width 1620 mm.
  • The specific consumption of the fuel of the model was 182 g/hp. an hour.

The tractor received the D-40 diesel engine, which could easily reduce fuel consumption. Positive changes were caused by the occurrence of an electricity supply system and by improvements in principle of gas distribution. Therefore, the motor head acquired enlarged passages of the exhaust and suction channels as well as valves with a larger diameter. A new air purifier appeared in the power supply system in combination with an old cleaner. The fuel filters of the engine were also subjected to modernization. Some heavy elements of the unit were replaced by lighter analogues. Belarus-40 was equipped separately with a hydraulic system that influenced the engine type. Some of his elements had to be placed differently.

device

The transmission of the model was completely reversed and mechanical. It enabled the maximum use of the total speed of the rear and pr e-basic speed of the tractor. In some versions, the installation of a hydraulic or mechanical driver was made available, which could work at low speeds.

One of the characteristics of the MTZ-40 was the overall compatibility with most excluded and collected machines and assemblies that were manufactured for other products in the MINSK tractor system. In addition, the model worked with the equipment of heavy Belarusian.

The rear wheels of the tractor had a large diameter, the front were a bit smaller, but were guides and were installed on a spring suspension. Thanks to the classic “Christmas tree” on wheels, MTZ-40 had high cross-country skills, which was particularly valued in agriculture.

Belarus-40 was carried out in accordance with a traditional scheme for the MINSK tractor system with a semi-graphic design of the skeleton. The engine was started from the carburetor start engine.

The disadvantages of the tractor could be attributed to problems with the start of the engine in winter. The best was the layout of levers and control mechanisms in the cabin.

The production of a model manufactured for just a few years has been over for a long time, since there are not so many offers for MTZ-40. The average price for copies of the last years is approximately 1,50,000 rubles. Early versions of use are much cheaper.

The analogues of Belarusa-40 include another product of the Minsk Factory-MTZ-50 and the T-40 tractor, which was manufactured in the Lipetsk tractor system.
