What to do in November in the garden
For someone like Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin, November seems a rather dull period, but gardeners, vegetable gardeners and dacha owners do not have to feel bored. Despite the snowfall and cold weather, there is still work to be done on the plot that needs to be completed as soon as possible.
Let’s talk about what garden and garden chores to look forward to in November. Let’s talk about some agronomic nuances that can increase productivity in the upcoming season.
Gardening in November.
By November, even in warm regions, the apple harvest ends, the last berries of flowering raspberries ripen, and dahlias and marigolds fade. Trees and shrubs shed their last leaves and prepare for winter, and the task of the gardener – to help them in this. To do this, it is necessary to perform a number of activities.
Irrigation to increase moisture
Few gardeners, especially beginners, know about the benefits of watering, or as it is also called, winter watering. However, this measure helps trees and shrubs to overwinter better, protects the roots from freezing and destroys some of the pests that went into the ground for the winter.
The essence of watering is to wet the soil to a depth of at least 60-80 cm.Usually in central Russia it is done in October, but best in November – the time when the ground is not yet completely frozen, but the sap movement in most plants has stopped or significantly slowed down. With the help of watering, you can achieve the following results:
- Create a reserve of moisture in the soil. The higher the moisture, the more comfortable garden plants will be in winter.
- Protect the roots in a snowless winter. If there is little or no snow, roots can die. Moisture watering protects against this.
- Eliminate most pests. Unlike the root system of plants, they do not tolerate moisture and freeze in the winter.
When plants are properly watered in November, water each circle near the trunk 2-3 times to allow the water to settle. Do not be afraid of overwatering – it is almost impossible in late fall.
With proper watering before winter, trees and shrubs will need less frequent watering next year.
garden cleanup
Garden cleanup is necessary for more than just aesthetic purposes. If done right, you can eliminate a herd of pathogenic bacteria and some pests. The most suitable month for this is November: the leaf fall has already stopped, and there will be no new debris.
First, collect and transport biological waste off-site:
- fallen leaves;
- mummified and rotten fruit (also inspect branches);
- dry branches;
- old bark;
- undergrowth and weeds.
This part should be burned and the weeds and leaves placed in the compost. If you leave trash in the garden for the winter, it will create a cheap environment for bacteria, fungi, and pests to overwinter. Pay special attention to fallen fruit, which can harbor pests over winter. For example, larvae of plum thicket in the bones of fallen fruits, and next year they will not damage the crop worse than the fruit moth.
Check tree boles and remove dead bark. Perform sanitary pruning of trees – remove all dry and diseased branches on the ring, treat areas with garden varnish. Protect against rodents – bandage the bark with tension bondage or heavy cardboard.
Carry out pruning of trees and treat the stump circles with a solution of Bordeaux liquid 3%.
Last Fertilization.
There is one more fertilization left to do this year – in November. For this, you can add mowed plants, compost and humus at a rate of 0.5-1 kg/m2 in the rooting circles. Do not forget to add urea in an amount of 5-10 g/m2.
Not an organic substance, it is not necessary to apply it on top in winter.
Tree pest treatment
Despite the fact that the main treatment against bears and other pests is in the spring, some of the work should be done in November. For this purpose, the branches, including the skeleton and ladder, are treated with various solutions:
- Against parasitic plants-one solution of iron vitriol 5% (50 g per 1 liter of water).
- Against anthracnose and rust 3% ik solution of iron sulfate (300 g per 10 liters).
- Caviar solution (150 g) with the addition of furnace ash (500 g) per 10 liters of water helps against slime.
For prevention, treat garden tools, paths and bedding circles, if you do not plan to spray with Bordeaux liquid.
Last mulch.
After moisture protection and cleaning of the area, the last mulch in the current year, the bedding circles of fruit trees and berries are covered with improvised biomaterials:
- Harvested in September from a nearby forest or Laub Park;
- Straw, hay or reeds from the previous year;
- Spruce or spruce needles;
- Sawdust;
- Removed bark.
The layer of mulch should be at least 9 cm, better 10-15 cm. The height of the mound to 30 cm.
In November you can also cover strawberries for the winter. If there is little snow or strong winds in your region, it is time to make around a low fence of poles and improvised materials.
Don’t forget to inspect the fruit storages, ventilate them and monitor the humidity of the air.
Garden work in November
By November, most of the work in the garden has already been done – the potatoes have long since been put away in the cellar, the beds have been dug up from the haulm and weeds. However, there is still a lot to do, the main focus – preparation for the future harvest.
Completion of fall planting
In some regions, winter garlic is planted in November, don’t forget to mulch the beds to keep the cloves from freezing. Continued planting of small onions Sevka, which is well tolerated transplanting and is not prone to shoots. Planting onions along the cool, the floor should no longer be warm so that the bulbs do not sprout early, but the floor should not be frozen.
With a little frost, you can sow plants that are resistant to shoots and some other types of plants:
For experiment, you can sow radishes and even Beijing cabbage, although you should be prepared for the fact that there will not be friendly sprouts.
Harvest for seedlings
In the fall, dry branches, leaves, and tops are burned the most. Try to choose dry days for this purpose – then you can collect the ash and store it until the next season without loss of quality. The collected ash is poured into polyethylene bags and covered so that it does not sink in. It can be stored in a shed or in the attic.
The components of soil mixes for growing seedlings are also collected in November. You buy peat, humus or lawn soil, imported sand. It is better to collect all the components in bags and put them under the shelter. Then it is easier to prepare mixtures and fill cups with them.
Other work in the garden
A hardworking gardener will always find something to do. The main thing is that the weather allows to work, and the work – there was no edge:
- You can continue to dig the organic material under the beds until the frosts start to fall.
- Air the greenhouse and greenhouse regularly so that the soil is saturated with moisture from the air.
- Put compost in the stack so you have something to feed them in the spring; Plant plants;
- Remove drip irrigation systems, hoses, and water from barrels;
- Check the condition of winter-protected beds and, if necessary, pour mulch.
The latter is removed and repaired ingeniously if necessary. In November, it would be a good idea to conduct a revision, the condition of sprayers, shovels, rakes, drains and other tools to be purchased.
Such work should not be postponed for the winter, preparations for the spring sowing will begin and there will be no time for tools.
Conclusion
City dwellers on weekends look out the window and remember the past summer, but in the village the work does not stop. In November, it is time to put in order the site, make plans for the next year, and prepare devices and equipment for further work.
Who is smarter – at the end of autumn makes a list of trees, shrubs and plants that will become seedlings and saplings in the spring, studying their characteristics and growth features. There is always something to do, the main thing – do not be lazy.
