Lawn after winter: How to restore a lawn after winter
Lawn after winter: lawn care in winter and preparation for spring
In winter, the lawn should be disturbed as little as possible so as not to damage the fragile blanket of grass. But sometimes a lawn also needs care after the winter! So start cleaning: Remove all leaves and sticks as well as the remains of last season’s grass. The turf should be clean so you can get a good idea of the condition of the lawn. After that, it’s easy to repair any damage and irregularities that need to be corrected. The list of procedures will be long, so you can work according to plan. A lawn in the springtime at the cottage requires care, read on for step-by-step tips on how to properly care for your lawn in the winter and prepare for spring.
How to Care for Your Lawn in Winter
Compared to other seasons, lawn care in winter requires little or no maintenance. But in order to restore the lawn after the winter, a number of measures need to be taken.
Take note! The most important thing in winter is to minimize the load on the lawn, otherwise bare patches may appear.
Lawns are best protected from frost by a layer of snow. If it is blown away by the wind, it makes sense to install a small fence or move snow from other parts of the site.
Please note: The optimum thickness of a layer of snow to prevent grass from freezing is 20 cm.
By systematically warming and cooling it is necessary to try to break the crust formed by any improvised means, such as a drill with ski cocks.
What to do with the lawn after the winter: Preparing it for spring
In early spring, you should take care that puddles do not form on the lawn. To do this, spread the snow evenly over the lawn.
It is most effective to ensure good drainage when laying the lawn.
Please note: Work such as filling, fertilising and aerating your lawn should start when the risk of frost has disappeared – at the end of March or the beginning of April.
If you find unsightly bare patches of lawn after the snow has melted, you should start to renovate.
Lawn fertilizer should be applied and the damaged areas reseeded with grass.
Winter is the calmest time for your lawn. During this time it is best not to disturb it. In the spring, after the onset of steady warmth, it is necessary to begin active work.
How to care for your lawn in spring: The roles of the lawn
After the winter, there may be noticeable bulges in the grass, which need to be smoothed out. It is best to use a special garden roller (weighing up to 75 kg) and drive over the bumps several times.
In the spring, the surface of the lawn should be leveled and the roots pressed into the floor. You can also use a lawn mower for leveling, but be careful when lifting the blades to avoid damaging the grass.
The procedure should be done 2-3 days before and after the first mowing. Although mowing the lawn is not always necessary, it will be an advantage because it will improve the life of the lawn and protect it from drying out.
The lawn after winter: The first cut
If you didn’t mow your lawn in the fall, do it in early spring. This will shorten the procedures and strengthen the grass. If the grass is long (more than 8 cm), mowing should be divided into two procedures.
For the first pass of the net, set the cutting height to 5.5-6 cm and only then trim to the target height of 3.5 cm.
If you have the option, add a basket to the mowing to collect all clippings and thereby reduce working time.
Note! Spring care of the lawn at the cottage is relevant in order to admire the beauty of its site in the summer.
Lawn after winter: combing out the lawn in the spring
How to care for the lawn after winter? When dry and yellow leaves and moss appear on your lawn in early spring, it’s a sign that they have some hard work ahead of them. Before the grass begins to grow vigorously, a thorough scarifying process must be done.
This consists of mowing the lawn vertically (to a depth of 5 to 15 mm) and removing moss, grass and dead wood from the lawn.
Please note! By removing the dead grass trimmings you will make room for the development of new stems.
Use a fan and twist rake for this procedure (normal rakes damage the lawn) or a special scraper.
First, the entire lawn is gently combed with a twist rake, “comb” the young grass with a fan and pick up what’s left. The remaining fine debris is fixed with a garden vacuum cleaner or by hand.
Important: Carefully move the strip of grass first in one direction, then in the opposite direction and form a “checkerboard”.
After the procedure, you need to collect all the leftovers and add them to the compost, because in their developed form they become a valuable fertilizer.
Do not worry if the lawn got worse after the scenario, it quickly recovers.
Useful tip: On a large lawn (over 100 m2), it’s better to use mechanical speed rather than manual speed because it requires a lot of physical strength and your hands will get very tired!
Such concepts as windrowing and verticalisation are very often regarded as synonymous, but although they are similar, the methods have significant differences.

Spring lawn care: Lawn ventilation
Now is the time to improve the condition of the subsoil where the roots are. The soil in lawns in small gardens is usually too hard, and grass grows poorly on it because water and air don’t get to the roots.
Stick the field into the lawn to a depth of 10 cm and loosen it gently. You can also use a wave with spikes or mechanical traverses to loosen. This improves soil structure, lawn root ventilation and drainage (water drainage). The ventilation procedure can be done at any time of the year, but it is better to do it in spring (immediately after articulation), as the grass grows better and the water, along with lawn fertilizer, dissolves into the deeper soil and roots.
How to plant a lawn in the spring: filling in lawn voids
Lawn permitting is also one of the steps of spring supply. It is carried out when you see that the lawn grass has died or flooded in an area. New seed should be chosen from the same grass species. Ideally, it should be the same grower. The prepared seeds are sown in a thin layer on the damaged area. A thin layer of soil or compost is applied on top.
In areas where the grass has been damaged so much that it cannot be repaired, it is better to remove and replace the old, damaged lawn.
Holes in the lawn can be filled:
- Pieces of grass from a role,
- Grass from another part of the garden.
- Or suitable grass seeds.
Lawn grass is best used. If the weather is favorable in the spring, the seeds will germinate in 7 days and the empty spaces will turn green. Dry the seeds all over the lawn so that the color is uniform. Apply a thin layer of soil or compost on top.
To make sure the compost gets as far to the floor surface as possible to cover the seeds and not end up in the grass, “sweep” the surface of the damaged area with steam. Regular watering is necessary for new seeds to germinate.
Reinforce new lawn grass only after a few weeks, only when it has grown, and reinforce accordingly!
Spring lawn care: Removing weeds
The start of a new season is the best opportunity to start with weed control. The sooner you remove them, the less risk that they will grow, give seeds and spread.
The most effective method, but also the most costly, is to manually remove the weeds along with the roots so they also prevent growth!
If there are a lot of weeds in the lawn, it is better to use a special herbicide, a chemical.
The most common problem is grass weeds (e.g., dandelion, chamomile, chamomile).
Such weeds are difficult to deal with, because you can only fight them by hand. If you articulate and mow low grass, this also kills the weeds.
Spring lawn care: Control lawn moss
Lawn moss is a serious problem. It can appear for a variety of reasons, including shaded areas, improper mowing of the grass, increased acidity of the soil, etc. In this case, lawn care turns into a real struggle with this nuisance.
If no action is taken, moss will soon spread to all trees, the house, the roof and all outbuildings. In addition, moss negatively affects almost all garden plants, reducing their vigour and nutrients. Therefore, you should try to get rid of it at the first sign. You can help your lawn fight moss by putting dolomite flour in the ground. It is brought around the place where you saw the first hotbed.
If moss has already spread to a large area, then you can’t do without the use of chemicals. Treatment is carried out in dry weather with special mixtures based on ammonium or copper sulfate. After a while the moss will sag, and it has to be removed from the lawn.
To prevent moss from growing on your lawn, you need to take care of it:
- Regularly combing it out.
- Regular airing.
- Mowing it not too short.
- Regular fertilising
Spring lawn irrigation
Watering is another important phase of the law in spring. It is done depending on weather conditions. If there are indications of watering, it should be done in the early morning. Daytime watering can cause burns. In addition, because of the high level of moisture evaporation, it is poorly accepted by the soil. It is also not recommended to water in the evening. Evening coolness can lead to excessive moisture and cause disease.
The lawn after winter: The first fertilisation
Spring is designed to stimulate grass nutrition to encourage growth and rest after winter. If you want to improve the appearance of your lawn quickly, you should use spring lawn fertilizer and special spring lawn fertilizers that are rich in nitrogen, a chemical element that stimulates rapid growth.
The lawn will grow immediately and will strongly suppress weeds. However, lush grass is less resistant to trampling and more susceptible to drought and cold.
Also, don’t use fertilizer in the spring until the danger of frost has passed, and don’t use it in the fall, as it stimulates the growth of green and frost-sensitive stems.
Organic matter is liked by earthworms, which can be brought deeper into the soil so that the roots get better nutrition and the soil retains moisture better.
It is rich in phosphorus, which promotes root growth. You won’t get the same quick effect from spring landscaping, but it will strengthen your lawn against drought.
Lawn after winter: Dealing with problems
Unpleasant spots can appear on the lawn in the spring. This can be caused by a variety of reasons:
Mold, fungi. If the grass on the site is darkened and covered with a whitish coating, then this area is affected by a fungal disease and it is necessary to treat it with a fungicidal drug. Radical measures are also possible: cut off a piece of lawn and seed the place.
Chemical burning. If fertilizer is applied in the fall or has not been watered after it has been applied, the grass can burn. The same burns remain from spilled gasoline or oil if you use a lawn mower, as well as from animals – cats or dogs. In order to restore the damaged area, we carry out all the standard measures of care: combing out, airing, watering, feeding. If there is no change, then the roots are damaged and only the removal of the shoots in this place and the grafting of seeds helps.
Fungi. To clear the lawn of mushrooms, you need to remove them in the ground with a fungus. A large ditch gently along the growth of mushrooms and fill it with new soil, compact it and put the seeds in.
Fighting moles. The appearance of a large pile of soil on the lawn in the spring signals that moles have been here. These animals feed on worms and the larvae of various insects. As they move around, they regularly throw soil on the surface, which forms what is called a “mole hole”. It must be removed from the surface of the lawn and backfilled. Numerous folk methods to combat moles often do not bring any results: the mole improves the old tunnel and digs a new one.
The most effective rest: purchased ultrasonic pots, bellows and poison baits.
Ultrasonic pots. For devices to help in the fight against moles, keep an eye on the number of friction on the site. They must meet the manufacturer’s recommendations and be replaced on time.
Mole Traps. Mole traps are installed in the oppressed course, which can be found on a slightly elevated ground. Carefully open the passage with a shovel and insert, as far as possible, two moles, aligned in different directions. One mole is placed to the right of the burrow, the other to the left.
Toxic bait. To put the bait using a pointed stick or pen, pierce the floor along the tunnel. Through the hole, use a spoon to place the bait and cover the hole with the floor, trying to prevent seeding.
Conclusion. If you’ve done all the spring lawn care work, you’ll have the same healthy and beautiful look in just a few weeks. It’s time for regular mowing and watering. These are all lawn care tips for spring after winter.
We wish you that your spring care doesn’t go to waste, and your garden will have a green, fluffy emerald carpet all summer long.
How to care for your lawn in spring: Steps after months, cheap days for 2022
Lawn care in the spring depends on the condition of the lawn, after the winter the grass is not always in a hurry. From my own experience, I know that even the most well-kept, dense lawn is capable of unpleasant surprises. Repair work is done in a certain order. I will tell you in order.
For those looking for information on lawn care in winter, there is a section on this at the end of the article.

Basic steps for lawn care in the spring
Rolled biennial and established lawns are similar in structure. The density depends a lot on the variety of grasses.
Overgrown lawns need more regrowth, garden mixes are more stable.
When open areas appear, they need to be seeded with a lawn mixture. For this purpose, it is advisable to buy a seed mixture, even when planting from the edge. Its germination rate reaches 7 years. The rest of the care is standard:
- Clean up dry grass and leaves from the residue;
- If they have accumulated a lot, remove them (this is called strangling);
- Enriching the roots with oxygen (ventilation);
Stone and ridge.
First of all, you need to assess whether this role is necessary. It is carried out when the floor of the branches is 5 centimeters, early loading can harm the grass. To disperse the remaining snow, it is better to go through the sods – I pile wide boards. When there were lamellas left after the repair, began to use them very convenient!
The laying of stones is done in several cases:
- In the formation of irregularities that protrude above the ground;
- Moles or earth rats have made passages;
- The seeds were sown in the fall, it is necessary to compact the floor;
- The side is uneven, puddles form.
After rolling, the floor is leveled, compacted. If you use a special roller, you do not suffer.
Until there was no warehouse roller, I used for this purpose cladding made of pipes, it was simply attached with wire. In the first two or three years, it is desirable to turn the lawn. A thick lawn forms a level lawn.
The best tool for shaping a lawn is a fan rake. It is good not only for getting dry sounds, but also for getting mulch out of the lawn. This is especially necessary for young lawns and areas where winter is a drag. Ordinary garden rakes with sharp tines are not suitable for lawns, they take away the grass with them, believe me, the blows are persistent.
There is a certain technique of combing: the lawn is first passed along, then across. For best results, additional combing diagonally is practiced. I take a rake as soon as the soil has dried out. Then the young grass will come up together.

Scarifying and scarifying
Top-cleaning the turf (scarifying) is done as needed when the fine grass that has accumulated at the roots begins to interfere with growth. On lawns, we remove the felt after two years on the third.
scarifiers and scarifiers
Mechanical scarifying is best done before raking the lawn. It is thought that if the lawn is well combed with a rake after mowing, scarifying will not be necessary, but I’m not so sure.
Scarifying (mowing the lawn to comb it and oxygenate it) is also sometimes done.
If necessary, on heavy soils, sanding is carried out – flat earth or the entire area of the lawn is filled with river sand or light soil, in which the turf quickly forms (compost soil is mixed with sand in a ratio of 1:1).
Lawn diseases occur with a lack of iron. Spring treatment with iron sulfate is recommended, especially in floodplains and after prolonged flooding. They are protected from weeds by special preparations Gazontrel, Lontrel, Magnum. Treatment with herbicides should be carried out with gloves and a respirator. On the first quiet evening it is better to immediately spray the lawn when thistle, euphorbia appear on it.
From the ubiquitous dandelion will help folk remedy – boiling water. Boiling the sprouts after emergence will destroy the flowers. They recommend burning dandelions with a blowtorch and sprinkling the cuts with salt or citric acid. To be honest, I have not tried these methods. My grandmother used to pour boiling water on dandelions along the fence; she used to heat the bathhouse on purpose. For me, the only way to get rid of dandelions is to uproot them. There are even special tools for this now. Read more about diseases, pests, how to deal with them and other lawn problems in the articles:
Aerating and mowing your lawn in the spring
Instead of digging over the lawn, it is aerated – digging into the ground to a depth of 25 cm.To work use:
- A pitchfork, they are poked to its full depth, slightly bent, transferred to a new place. This is how the entire plot is passed. There are special tubular forks – instead of tines in the crossbar, sections of stainless steel pipe are cut from below at an angle of at least 45 degrees. Very handy thing, frees the soil from excess moisture.
- Drum aerators, equipped with large sharp spikes. They are inconvenient for processing small lawns, but for a large and flat lawn is quite suitable. If you undertake to make a drum yourself, you need to properly calculate the load so that the spikes stick into the ground under the weight of the drum.
- I have heard of aerator sandals – sandals, they are attached by straps or ropes. One puts on such shoes, hoes the lawn, loosens it up. But in my opinion, such “ventilation” does not help much.
Spring ventilation is carried out annually. If the soil is heavy, then recompact the turf several times during the season.
The first cut of the grass is done when it rises 10 centimeters, cut it half. We have found that the first timely cut increases the density of growth.
It should be noted that there is no standard norm for grass height, it depends on the type of mixtures planted. The growth rate of the lawn also varies. By the way, mowing is carried out when the grass is dry.
During the existence of Ruzhayka on our property, I learned: the more the grass grows, the less it needs water. Young lawns are watered every day, old lawns about twice a week. It is convenient when there is a watering system. If there is no such a possibility, use a regular hose. Current at a pressure is well sprayed if the hose is partially covered with a finger. On sunny days, no burns appear on the grass.
It is better to moisten the soil in the early morning or late evening if there is no direct sunlight. Watering at dusk affects the development of fungal infections. The leg appears over the grass at night and delays sunrise. In the morning, heavy watering is eliminated, but the risk of root rot increases significantly in some grass species.
How and what to fertilize your lawn in spring
Nitrogen fertilization is desirable in spring, which stimulates the growth of grass. Urea, ammophoska or ammonitrate is used at the rate of 20 g (matchbox) per square meter. Later, better after the first cut, apply phosphorus, potassium and calcium at a ratio of 2: 1: 1.
If there are problems with the selection of fertilizer, I recommend a universal mixture fermatik, fertilizer spring summer. Make the composition according to the instructions on the package. With proper fertilizing, the lawn looks fluffy.

Work up to a month
The calendar is calculated and compiled for the Moscow region. In other regions of the middle belt, in the Urals, in Siberia terms are shifted depending on weather conditions.
Instruments are requested in March. If the snow melts by the end of the month, the ground will have time to dry out, and the area can be surveyed. It will be necessary to prepare everything necessary. It will become clear whether seeds or lawn rolls are needed for restoration, whether bowing is required.
April is the start of work: combing, loosening. Propagate lawn grass if there are bare spots. Aerating. Conduct the first fertilization.
May is the time for the first mowing, second feeding, fighting dandelions, they become noticeable. If you have hot weather, frequent watering is necessary.

Winter Lawn Care
The lawn in the garden needs care all year round. The main work falls on the warm season, but a number of rules should also be observed in winter.
There are two basic rules of lawn care in winter, they are quite simple:
- Don’t walk on the turf.
- Remove ice in a timely manner.
Moving around the area should be designed to minimize walking on it. As early as +5 degrees, plants become brittle and vulnerable. For example, if you continue to load the pavement with your own body or gardening tools, then in spring you will surely see a sad picture – in these places the grass simply will not be able to rise.
Only after the thickness of the snow cover on the lawn exceeds 25 centimeters, you can walk on it without fear.
Snow removal from the site is not necessary. You should only do this on paths that you use regularly.
With the first thaws, which we may have even in the middle of winter, it is important to ensure that the lawn is not blocked by an ice crust over the grass. Plants don’t breathe underneath it. If you notice this on your property, take a rake or pitchfork and break up the ice, otherwise all the grass will just dry out and die.
If you follow these simple guidelines, you are guaranteed a bright, fragrant lawn that will make you and your neighbors proud in spring.
