How we choose our grape varieties – Mahotka V.I.
Many of you have recently asked us the question, “Why is the assortment of planting material we offer sharply decreasing?” In order not to repeat in responses to such appeals, I will try to clearly explain our position on this issue:
- Our vineyard was planted in 2004. At the time, we were “blind kittens” in our selection of a variety of grape varieties and hybrids. Both table varieties and process varieties. And we planted EVERYTHING we were given in the project.
- As a result, we “GOT” a number of grape varieties that are long outdated, unprofitable and capricious to grow. And on top of that we had to grow 30% technical varieties.
- As time passed, we began to realize what…… we were stuck in. Table varieties for the most part were not competitive on the market. And the technical ones, at a normal price, no one wanted them. They were given (hands down) a maximum of 50% of the cost price.
- We didn’t want to produce wine ourselves. We immediately chose to grow and sell table grapes and their planting material.
- But five years have passed since we moved the vineyard. Almost half of the lost years. It took so many years to figure out what to plant and what was in demand in the market.
- Since 2010, we have started to exchange grape varieties in plantings. Almost 80% of the plantings have been replaced. All the technical grape varieties except RED and MEMORY OF THE HAMMER have been uprooted below. These are the Cahors varieties that are still in high demand in the market. The peduncle is almost completely removed before pruning.
- Until 2018, the variety of varieties and hybrid forms of table grapes that we planted suited us (brought a steady income).
- But in 2018, after analyzing the financial results of the year, we saw that most of our vineyard had become unprofitable or would become so in the coming years.
- So we decided to drastically change the range of our plantings to make them new, more profitable and in demand today.
- We uprooted 8 hectares of vineyard and in the same year we planted two hectares of DUBOVSK PINK and LILY OF THE VALLEY in their place, replacing the irrigation system with a more modern, economical one. (Watch our video.)
- In 2019, we planted 0.5 hectares of Bucephalandra, the same number of Black Thumbs and Vetrenica with Velez.
- In 2020, we added one hectare each of DUBOVSK PINK and LILY VALLEY.
- In the same year, we grafted the newest and most promising varieties and hybrid forms of grapes for the purpose of testing. Such as: Nutcracker, Lamborghini, Alvika, Bant, Pink Elephant, Taldun, Carnival, Lilac and Bohemia. We have already received cuttings.
- This year we have already purchased 15 more varieties and hybrid forms of grapes for cultivation and testing in 2021. They are: BASANTI, AVATAR, MENE, RATATOUY, ALICE IN WONDERLAND, HALLOWEEN, ALLIANCE, TORNADO, RAMBO, CASANOVA, VELURS, FLAGSHIP, CONQUER and HONEY QUEEN. Negotiations are underway to acquire 8-10 more varieties, both table and raisin.
- Planting material is grown in 2021 and 2022 from these varieties and hybrid forms (which suit us after testing) and they replace the remaining 4 hectares of vineyards (previously uprooted).
- All of the varietal composition in our vineyard will be replaced by 2023 and, accordingly, almost everyone will grow the varieties and hybrid forms of grapes that we have grown.
- Based on this, from 2023 there will be no more than 10-20 varieties and hybrid forms of table grapes in our catalog. Because we offer for sale only those varieties and hybrid forms of grapes that grow in our vineyard.
Sincerely yours Makhotka Vasily Ivanovich.

For different regions
Breeders are actively working on the development of grape varieties that can be grown in different regions of Russia. Today, gardeners have the opportunity to choose one of the new types of fruit crop, taking into account the weather characteristics of the place of cultivation.
Different varieties of grapes are grown in each region
For Crimean Peninsula
The Crimean peninsula is the leader in harvesting home grapes. Here gardeners prefer to plant early varieties that ripen by summer:
- Saba Pearl. A variety that bears small, round berries. The color is amber-golden. Flesh flavor with notes of nutmeg. Its clusters are fragile;
- The queen of the vineyard. Large-fruited variety with large round berries of amber color;
- Pink Typhus. Variety with an elongated bunch of lilac-pink, up to 25 cm long. The shape of the berries is rounded.
For the Volga region.
Gardeners of the Volga region in 2019 can choose one of the early varieties:
- Dzintars. A table variety with ultra-early technical maturity. Gives the first harvest in 90 days, and in greenhouse conditions – in 75 days. The bunches of medium-sized bunches weighing 200-300g. The berries are rounded, weighing 3 g each, amber-yellow in color, the flesh of the honey flavor;
- Sylvia. Variety with very early maturity. The berries are ovoid, pink. They form medium loose bunches weighing 0.4-0.7 kg. The flesh is dense, very sweet;
- super extra. A strong-growing hybrid with large grapes, weighing 500-800 g. The oval berries weigh 7-10 g, green-yellow. The flesh is fleshy and sweet.

Winemakers in the Moscow region should pay attention to the following varieties and hybrids:
- F-14-75. A medium-grown liana yields bunches of 250-300 g. The berries are round, cream color. Muscat flavors. Very hardy (survives temperature fall t o-26 °C);
- Cherry. Early maturing table hybrid. Gives the harvest in 100-110 days. Frost-resistant. The bunches are small (weighing 150-350 g), medium density. The berries are rounded.
For the Urals.
Residents of the Urals can choose early grape varieties for planting:
- Beauty of the North. The hybrid matures in 110-115 days. It belongs to the vigorous. Characterized by high winter hardiness (can withstand temperatures up to minus 26 °C). The average mass of the bunch of 250-500 grams. The berries are round, white and pink. The flesh is fleshy and has a tart taste;
- Muscat ultra early white. Technical grade with high sugar content (over 25%). The weight of the bunch about 380 g. The berries are round, golden yellow. The flesh has a citrus flavor.
For Siberia
Winemakers in Siberia should pay attention to the following varieties:
- Ruswen. Table pink grapes with early maturity. ripens in 110-115 days. Large-fruited, the average weight of berries is 50 g, the flesh has a muscat-saffron taste and is characterized by high (up to 20%) sugar content;

Such a property as frost-resistance is important when selecting a variety for planting in the harsh Siberian climate.
new grape varieties
New mother grape varieties often show high yields combined with high taste qualities. The top ten include:
- Seedless VI-4. A tabular hybrid that ripens 140 days after ovary formation. Has white oblong berries, large bunches;
- table grapes Nizina-2. Weight of grapes reaches 2 kg. The berries are large, light purple. There is a slight acidity in the flesh;
- Veles. Raisins Muscat stands out among all varieties of sugar-sweet taste. Ripens in 120 days. Each bunch weighs approximately 1.5 kg. The berries are light pink.
Typical mistakes made by winemakers
First, choose a species that is not suitable for the climatic zone. This is a common mistake that leads to the death of the vine, which is not adapted to certain regional characteristics. This is especially true in northern regions, which experience a severe drop in temperature during the winter.
Sometimes there is not enough sunlight for the vines to fully mature. When planted, which is not suitable for the cultivar Liana has a lower yield or simply does not give roots.
Second, common mistakes include planting a new species in a vineyard with other varieties. The newly acquired species should be planted separately from the remaining vines the first time. This prevents disease contamination and prevents possible overlap.
